Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card follows a young boy Ender on his journey to becoming the I.F. commander. Throughout the novel Ender progresses through various levels of training where he learns valuable skills both in and out of the battle room. In Battle School Ender is faced with many social challenges as he struggles to fit in with the older kids who are jealous of his success. Despite the social struggles Ender picks up battle strategies and invents his own at a rapid rate. In Battle School he is constantly under the watchful eye of the teachers who desperately need him to succeed and they will do anything in their power to make it happen. Ender’s schedule is constantly manipulated by the adults to make sure he is able to adapt to any sudden changes. Adapting to sudden changes will help him fight the unpredictable buggers who may choose to strike at any moment, even when he least expects it. To prepare Ender for these situations Graff hands Ender a piece of paper telling him about his second battle of the day, “Now. That’s ten minutes from now. My army will be in the middle of showering up after practice”(230). This battle has come to Ender completely unexpected and on short notice, preparing him for the unpredictable schedule that will occur when fighting the buggers. He will now have to adapt to the stressful circumstance and get his army ready in a moments notice for their battle soon to come. Once Ender makes it to fighting the buggers he is regulated under an even tighter schedule as the buggers may attack at any moment. He will have to be ready to battle at a moment's notice even if he is in the middle of sleeping. Mazer Rackham shook Ender awake saying, “It’s time for another battle” (326). Even though he was still sleeping, Ender had to get up and fight the buggers right at that moment. He is forced to comply with his strictly regulated schedule so he will be ready to fight any oncoming bugger attack. Ender’s schedule has been closely regulated since the day he met Graff at his house. Graff forces Ender to go to Battle School with him only minutes after he accepted the offer to join the I.F. training program. When Ender makes the decision to join Graff says, “ You can change your mind. Up until the time you get in my car with me, you can change your mind” (56). Ender only has the few short minutes Graff allows him to change his mind and say goodbye to his family. Thus showing how tightly regulated his schedule really is.
