Environmental Conflict in the Otago Water Plan 6A
The following conflict that I will be presenting is one that has been resolved this May of 2014, but is an important issue involving the sustainability practices of land ownership and its effect on clean water management. The conflict developed between the Otago Regional Council with their proposed water plan change 6A in 2012, and groups of farmers and foresters who showed concern with the plan.
Otago Regional Council’s Position:
The Otago Regional Council’s proposed plan change 6A to the Otago water plan corresponds with an exceptional national and international focus on water management, including improving water quality in rivers, streams and lakes (Federated Farmers). The rules aim to ensure good quality in rivers, lakes, wetlands and aquifer. It promotes water that is clear of muck and odor, safe for swimming, able to gather
