For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing. As Jonas reached the bottom of the steep hill, he lifted Gabriel from his lap and removed himself from the wooden sled. Gabe’s cold face pressed against his chest. “We’re almost there Gabriel, just hold on.” His voice trembles.
Gabe’s little body was shaking, shivering, but Jonas didn’t know what it meant. Every step he took in the snow now weighed him down like bricks tied to his ankles. He was getting closer, so close he could feel the warmth and energy coming from the community in front of him. It was all coming as a dream to him, a dream so real and vivid.

Gabriel poked his head out from the blanket. His eyes were red from crying, his cheeks stained brown of dirt. A huge vehicle drove by him. He had never seen such a thing. It was big and yellow and had a curved front. It was pushing the snow as it drove, leaving nothing but road behind it. Jonas reached out.
“Excuse me sir!” He tapped an older looking man on the shoulder for his attention. He immediately pulled his hand back and reminded himself that was a rude thing to do, “I apologize for invading your space sir.” He bowed his head, “You see I need help. I came from… From another community. Well, I- I mean we escaped.”
He was rushing over his words, speaking much too quickly and misusing words. He remembered Asher and how he always talked that way when he was nervous. He had never understood why Asher did that, but has realized now.
“Slow down there, son,” The man laughed, “Now, how about you tell me your name?”
“Well, my name is Jonas and- and this is Gabriel.” He says more confidently, “My little brother.”
