Arlo is a freshman in highschool and is in love with the game of football. Arlo is hardworking and determined to play highschool football for the varsity team even though his mom quotes head injuries from ´the file´. Arlo is one of the best players on the varsity team and makes all of the monstrous plays and that is enough to convince him that everything is okay.¨All I ever wanted to do was hit people¨ (Lynch 1).
Being identified as having a National Jewish Book Award for children 's literature the book The Devil 's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen’ is a historical fiction book about a Jewish family that changes with the flip of a page. Hannah travels back in time when her and her family are at a family dinner called the Seder about the Holocaust. Hannah had been forced out of their living space to go to a unknown place but rather than later, she figures out she is going to a concentration camp. While her and her family are at the concentration camp many of her friends and her family do not survive. Not only does this change Hannah from being a static character to a dynamic character it changes Hannah as a person because she goes from being selfish, scared,to relieved.
The character collective 0-0009 is a flat character, one whose sole purpose in the book is to convey the feelings of the group toward Equality 7-2521. The dynamic between the two brothers is quite interesting since they seem at first not to have a lot in common. Their behavior and actions demonstrate perfectly the differences between the two brothers. One could underline the fact that the dynamic between the two brothers is different from what we previously seen in Tex or The Outsiders because Peter and Edmund have two sisters. Edmund does not seem to accept the changes occurring during his stay in the Professor’s house.
Individuality allows every person to be themselves and be different from each other. However, In Ayn Rand’s novella Anthem, Rand describes a society where the people were not allowed to openly be themselves, or else they would be punished for being different. The main character, Equality, notices he is different slowly throughout the novella, but kept continuing to be like everyone else for awhile. These rules exist in this society to strip human individuality in order to achieve total equality.
“We were born with a curse. It has always driven us to thoughts which are forbidden. It has always given us wishes which men may not wish. We know that we are evil, but there is no power or will in us to stop it” (18). Equality 7-2521 is born into a society in which individuality is a crime.
In Ayn Rand’s novella, Anthem, mankind is a philanthropic machine. The brotherhood nobly works together to achieve a common goal. In doing so, each man is asked to disregard his own personal means and goals. For every decision must be a collective thought and every advancement, a joint action. However, one man in this machine malfunctions.
In the novel Anthem the author, Ayn Rand discusses the ways Equality 7-2521’s world is a dystopia because independent thought, information and freedom are restricted, the natural world was banished and distressed, a concept is worshipped by the citizens and the society is an illusion of a perfect , utopian world. To begin with, Ayn Rand explains how the Equality 7-2521’s world is a dystopian society because the freedom of think and do anything for yourself is restricted. Equality states “It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see... It is as if we were speaking alone to no ears but our own.
Moral Assessment of Anthem In Ayn Rand’s novel, Anthem, Equality lives in a communist society that believes everyone must work for and be exactly like one another. For much of the novel, he believes what the Council of Vocations tells him, despite his intelligence and independence. By the end of the book, he realizes that the idea that everyone is the same and must work for each other is flawed. He deserves to live his own life and enjoy himself.
Character Analysis When thinking of families most of the time its people you grew up with, and the culture you grew around. The story " A Pair of Tickets" () draws on what family and culture do to family 's and more importantly one person. June grows up in America where the culture to her is more familiar than that of her Chinese parents. While growing up she thought countless of times that the ways of her mother where strange and embarrassing, and at time she didn’t think of herself as truly to her heritage. Throughout the story June goes through different stages of grief, and finding herself when she truly thought she wasn’t a part of a culture.

In the short nonfiction story “Prometheus” by Evslin, Prometheus could be seen as kind and caring in one’s eyes. However, did he know what his actions would lead to? In the short informational text “Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged” by Suganya and Shanthi, Suganya and Shanthi analyze Ayn Rand’s definition of objectivism and altruism.
Ayn Rand is a defender of individualism and believes that collectivism can be destructive and ruin the lives of individuals. She paints Toohey as a villainous monster who threatens personal freedom by using his charm and intelligence (manipulation) to influence people and further his own personal agenda. I would agree with Rand's assessment that Toohey is not a selfless individual. Instead, he is a manipulative and power-hungry individual who seeks to use others to achieve his own goals. Toohey is an incredibly selfish character whose statement about himself couldn't be further from the truth.
Being a parent comes with one of the greatest responsibilities on earth; holding a child under your guidance and directing them toward a path of life that will bring them success and happiness. When a child blatantly refuses the loving guidance, however, and displays rebellion instead of obedience, it brings great detriment to both child and parent. Traci, the main character of the movie Thirteen, exhibits a deeply unsettling rebellion towards her mother throughout the movie. She blatantly threatens her mother and expresses disturbing lividity when her mother makes any attempt at asking about her doings or plans. Her mother seems to be frightened of her own daughter’s extreme tantrums and mood swings, and does not appear to fully accept the possibility that Traci could be involved with drugs, theft, or boys.
She turns the normal understanding of Judeo – Christian or even humanitarian principles on its head when she says that “man has a moral right to happiness” and that “virtue is a currency” When we wonder what this approach will do to our moral obligations to other human beings, the conclusion is that it would result in an every man for himself situation where no consideration is given to the rights of other people and everyone is simply concerned with their own happiness and don't really think about how that impacts on the happiness of other people. I can't really see how that would work without ending in conflict and everyone being unhappy. That is not to say that there is no value to Ayn Rand's ideas. She is probably right about a lot of things because you can certainly go too far the other way and have some people impacting on the happiness of others because they think there is an obligation on those people to sacrifice their own happiness for someone
“Two Kinds,” by Amy Tan, essentially revolves around the struggle of Jing Mei and her constant conflict with her mother. Throughout her life, she is forced into living a life that is not hers, but rather her mom’s vision of a perfect child; because her mother lost everything, which included her parents and kids, so her only hope was through Jing Mei.
