Staten Island, July 17, Eric Garner was yet another victim of police brutality. In Garner's case he was killed by a misunderstanding, police stopped Eric and allegedly accused him of stealing cigarettes. This lead to Eric Garner getting killed. In a video it is shown how Garner is saying ¨I can't breathe, ¨ repeatedly. (Bloom and Imam, 2014) Eric is not the only person who has been a victim in police brutality, last year there were roughly about 1,152 people killed by police officers and yet the number still keeps increasing. Most of these incidents are caused by misunderstandings or either because of their race, but yet this is an increasing problem we face today. This issue is a hotly debated subject. For example, in Baltimore of 2015 a boy named Freddy Gray had been killed in police custody. According to an Upfront article, ¨Blue and Black¨ they expand the issue of police brutality by explaining how they people have died and how many. It says, “Freddy gray, 25, suffered a fatal spinal cord injury in police custody, leading to protest and unrest.¨ (healy and jones, 2015) This means that people, including Freddy could die on the spot due to a misunderstanding also not only because of a misunderstanding but sometimes it's due to the race of the person. Also, due to excessive force used my officers many are working to stop use of excessive force. In the article, “Cleveland will overhaul its police under watchful eye of U.S. officials,” explain how since many officers are using excessive force, the want to change that. It says, “Current practices will be revised to help put a stop to officers' use of excessive force.¨(By Associated Press, adapted by Newsela staff, 2015) This demonstrates that since over the years there have been many cases of police using excessive force against other people, and when the police explain what happened we only hear one side of what happened because either the person is injured or dead. Lastly, they use force on different races and different places, only because they want to. The article, ¨:After Dallas, We Don't Need to Say 'Blue Lives Matter¨ further explained on how police are now using aggressive force to not only people of different races but also where. It says, “But I also don't believe murderous racist intention is necessary to make an execution a brutal, racist act.” (Lennard, 2016) This means that not only do they use excessive force, but they mostly target people of different race, color and in different cases use force on people depending where they are.
