Did you know that in the past, children were told to learn exactly what their

teacher told them to learn and to just be quiet? This approach is very different from

today, where asking questions is encouraged. Like it or not, learning is always

changing, and not always for the better. In the19th century, kids were learning English,

math, poems and prayers. Today we learn English, math, science, social studies and

many other subjects, including gym and art. Even with all of the developments, only

eleven percent of the twelfth grade students in a study could successfully explain their

results in a science experiment. Many students in high school are not prepared for

Among developed nations, America ranks 17th in the

world in learning. As the the most powerful economy on earth, it is vital that we play a

leading role in education. Furthermore, most jobs in our business­driven society

today require an advanced education.An average education is unacceptable.

Education has changed so much since the 19th century . Technology use is booming.

Ultimately, however, education in America is not always as effective as it must be.

Education today is not always so effective. Parent participation has gone down.

Student, alcohol and drug use is rising, and important life skills are not being learned in

schools. According to a survey conducted in 1990 to 1991, teachers stated that they

think lack of parent participation is a major problem. If the adults are apathetic , the kids

may start follow suit. In 1988, more than twenty percent of teachers interviewed thought

alcohol was a problem at school. That suggests that students are disobeying teachers

and creating a potentially dangerous situation for themselves and others around them. If
