Another thing discouraging students from attending college is what they get out of it. In an article by Richard Vedder he makes a valid point when he said “Can we afford to expend $100,000 or more in resources giving kids a college degree, only to see them take taxi driver jobs for which the college education added hardly a scintilla of employment skill?”(1). Is it worth for people to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to go to college to only drop it for a job that offer far less? That’s up to you to decide. One difference between a job and a career is that a career is something you choose to do while job is a duty which is usually just motivated by money. If you’re going to invest thousands of dollars into a college career it better be because you enjoy what your doing or going to do. You’re going to invest a big part of your life in this field and will have to work with for most part. Unlike careers you’ll most likely will be jumping from job to job not finding something that fits your ambitions. According to Rachel Beckstead, “College graduates are typically more satisfied with their careers for a number of reasons. They’re able to find higher paying careers. They’re able to get into positions with job advancement opportunities. They’re able to get hired by employers that provide generous benefits” (1). I can agree strongly with what Beckstead is saying. With a degree many benefits come with it that contribute to a higher job satisfaction. The possibility to move up in a career is powerful as we always seek a greater challenge and opportunities so to pursue that is only a incentive to work up and be where you want to be.
