During the early 20th century, Europe finally entered a period of peace. However, this facade of Europe came crashing down and its secrets were finally revealed. There were multiple reasons as to why an era of peace was disrupted. The three largest of these reasons include militarism, alliances, and imperialism. Other countries in Europe erratically started stockpiling their weapons and expanded their military, and this process was known as militarism. As countries noticed other countries using militarism, they began to follow, fearing for future events. Alliances also began to get in the way as they split Europe in half. The reason that militarism was a cause for World War 1, according to document 6, is because of the carelessness of the leaders. The leaders were ready to mobilize without the threat of an oncoming war. However, when World War 1 actually began, they never tried to put an end to it. During this time, many European leaders also believed that militarism, or force, would solve everything. Militarism clearly showed that it was dangerous for multiple reasons and was one of the leading causes of the war. Around thirty years before World War 1 started, the creation of secret treaties began in Europe. There were two main alliances which split Europe into two: Triple Entente and Triple Alliance (document 2). The history behind the Triple Alliance involved multiple alliances such as the Dual Alliance (between Germany and Austria-Hungary), the Austro-Serbian Alliance, and then finally the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy).
