A poem is a literary work that expresses ideas, thoughts, and beliefs written by the author. They can be written, sung, and spoken to get one’s opinion across. The beauty of poetry is that it is so diverse. Since it can be expressed in more than one way, it can also be interpreted in many different ways. Robert Frost in the poem, “The Road Not Taken” and James Bay in his song, “Let it Go” express their ideas in two different ways. Robert’s rendition of his poem can be less entertaining than having a beat and rhythm like Bay’s song. Although the two may differ in the ways that they are expressed they are both poetry. Now that one can see he is not only talking about himself but another person, as the reader the storyline and the big picture all come along nicely. We can see a clear image starting to take form from these couple of lines. Both authors use imagery to their advantage and it is clear that it worked wonderfully. With the similarities being easy to see, the differences may not be as easy to see. The first difference is the usage of rhyme schemes. In the poem, “The Road Not Taken” Robert used a different rhyme scheme in each stanza. Sometimes he would put the rhyming words at the end of each line or it was used in the start of each line, but rhyming was always a constant. In James song, he rarely used rhyming. He instead told a story. Even though both authors told a story, Robert’s provided a rhythmic pattern while James’ song followed a beat. The second difference between the two was the use of alliteration. The use of alliteration was seen more in the poem than in the song. Robert used it when he said, “wanted wear”(8).
