Adoption and Sexual Orientation
Traditionally, parenting is consist of male and female to be considered a normal family. As our society became more diverse and more understanding of every person’s beliefs and sexual orientation, stereotypes and the conceptual about the role of sexual orientation in parenting remain unsettled. Same-sex adoption is being justified by the idea that children must have both a male and female parents to have a family normalcy. Some of the controversies that surround lesbian and gay parenting are the children’s development during the toddler and pre-school years, where children begin to assess gender differences and behavior problem begin to emerge (Blakemore, Barenbaum, & Liben, 2009). For example, in traditional psychology, “mothers who put children in emotional double bind caused schizophrenia and seductive mother caused homosexuality in their sons” (Galliano, 2003; p.134). Moreover, “the stereotypes proclaimed that the welfare mother had children only to increase her monthly benefits” (Galliano, 2003; p. 133) and the list goes on.
This article of Adoption and Sexual Orientation has shown its strengths and its weaknesses. According to this article’s previous study, many studies involving lesbian and gay parents and their children have employed convenience samples, which relied entirely on self-report data (Bigner & Jacobson, 1992), and have not included any comparison groups such as other heterosexual parents. Meaning, researchers drawn sample from one specific area, which caused bias againts the other groups and caused the questions of same-sex parenting on the rise. On the other hand, the strengths of this article is based on recent study, where researchers used the systematic method, which allowed both groups of parents, teachers and outside caregivers to participate in the research.
