When you think of an ideal family, do you see a white picket fence life with a mother, a father, and perhaps children? For same-sex couples, it doesn’t exactly work out like that; apart from the fact it’s comprised of two females or two males. Same-sex couples have adoption as an option to have the opportunity to raise children, but they struggle quite more than heterosexual couples when it comes to adoption. I believe that same-sex couples should be able to adopt as freely as heterosexual couples, and should not be discriminated against by adoption agencies. This is a civil rights issue, because everyone has a right to choose to be a parent, and no one should have to struggle or be held back from trying to be one. In one article titled, “How Do Children In Same-Sex Adoption Fare?”, by the Golden Cradle Adoption Services, it talks about studies done using different children adopted by same-sex and heterosexual couples. The results of those studies as stated later in the article prove to be that, “...factors such as self-esteem, relationships with peers, intelligence, behavior, and gender identity were the same whether children were raised by heterosexual couples or same-sex couples.” This just goes to show a person’s sexuality does not decide their ability of parenthood, and couples of different sexual orientations are on an equal basis with one another. Furthermore, the important characteristics of an adoptive parent, are being able to adjust to adoption, being able to handle parental stress, and having good parenting skills, as the Golden Cradle Adoption Services mentions.
