Animal Research: An Unfortunate Necessity Animals have been used by humans since 500 B.C. (Hobson-West, 2012). They are a huge part of human lives whether it be for companionship, research, or food. The treatment of animals, their cognitive ability, and if they do indeed have rights or not have been a major source of controversy for several years. Each opinion varies widely in the general public, and even between scientists. Many of the debates bring into question morals, values, religion, ethics, etc. Unfortunately, using animals in experiments is a necessity for the development of medicine, understanding the way the body works, and understanding the environment. Studying the behavior of animals and ecological principles allows for the development of solutions to environmental problems. Behavior experiments done in chimpanzees has shown the importance of cooperation and reconciliation in social groups of humans (Snowdon). Even the great Charles Darwin did studies on emotional expression in animals that has shaped the field of psychology (Snowdon). Additionally, due to the increasing population, a better understanding of the laws of nature are especially important for accommodating the people, and protecting the welfare of the animals that share the planet (Howard, 1994). This continues to become a bigger and bigger issue each year, and a solution must be found. Studies conducted on reproductive behavior have shown a better understanding of captive breeding methods for whooping cranes, golden lion tamarins, and many other endangered species. Captive breeders who were unaware of the species' natural reproductive behavior were mostly unsuccessful (Snowdon). Even an understanding of foraging behavior in animals has provided a better understanding of forest regeneration. Many animals serve as seed dispersers and are essential for the growth of tree species and habitat preservation
