The event relating back to our work in class I attended was one called Breaking Through. When I was looking at the events on the list to choose from, frankly the only reason I chose Breaking Through was because it was convenient, close, and fit my schedule well. But what I learned about the experiences and situations that members of the LGBT community are put through, the subject became of much more importance. Going to this event opened my eyes and made me reevaluate some of my thoughts and feelings towards people with different sexual orientations.

Growing up, my family went to church regularly and we hadn’t really talked much about gay people until I was a teenager. I was in a youth ministries service where we were part of a larger service and then would go into smaller groups led by a “pack lead” (who was a parent volunteer who answered questions and was really involved with the students (in this case 7th graders) in our small group. One day we were in a series of services about sex. We had a service on sexual desire, sex in the media, safe sex/peer pressure, and finally sexual sin. It was during that service that the topic of gay sex came up, and from that, gay marriage. We were taught to not treat people differently but that it was a sin as defined in the bible. Later as I learned more about gay people, having friends that came out and such, I learned that they didn’t know it as a choice or lifestyle, but somehow that it was their nature. The more I learned about gay people, the more I moved away from being opposed to gay marriage. Saying that, I never was an advocate for gay marriage, simply someone who was impartial. My thought was that if it didn’t affect me, that I didn’t
