Deciding my research topic hardly took any time. I brainstormed many possible topics, but one particular topic seemed to stick. I have been interested in finding out more about Leukemia, because in April of 2017, my mother was diagnosed with Leukemia. It was such a huge surprise to our whole family. My family has usually been very close, open, and talkative about each other's lives. In the evening at a family meal or when everyone is together we would usually share how our day went. Nowadays, my family is not very good at communicating things about our day, so at times it can be scary not knowing what is going on in eachothers lives. I tend to worry especially about how my mother is doing. That is why I would like to know, “What are the causes, symptoms, and effects of being diagnosed with Leukemia?’ I know that Leukemia is cancer of the blood …show more content…

One treatment method is chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is a chemical that kills cells. Healthwise’s trusted staff state many ways chemotherapy can be administered, such as orally, topically, injection or a catheter (WebMD, 2015, Chemotherapy). My mother went through chemotherapy several times. The doctors administered the chemotherapy in the hospital through an IV into her veins. Later, my mom went through rounds of radiation. WebMD states in the article, “Radiation Therapy”, radiation is administered externally by a machine or by strategically placed plastic tubs that enclose radiation (WebMD, 2015, Radiation Therapy). Radiation therapy is a common treatment method for cancer patients. Now my mother is working on recovering from a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. Her transplant was administered similarly to how chemotherapy was administered, but a transplant requires tons of preparation. Many different medications can be prescribed for leukemia
