Logan Fuller-Delmont 6/8/16 Period 3 English 9 During the civil war the lives of the soldiers in the union and confederate armies had many differences but also many similarities. They are different and similar in the food they eat to the medical treatment they received throughout their lives as soldiers. Some of them are small things and others are bigger in differences. For starters I shall note some of the differences in the soldiers between the Northern also known as The Union and the Southern also known as The Confederates the average soldier for the Union were between the ages of eighteen through thirty-nine, while the Confederates soldiers were around the ages of sixteen through forty-nine years old. The Confederate Army had much better leadership Union Army could replace soldiers much quicker Confederate Army fought a defensive war The Confederate Army had trouble arming all their troops Confederate Army didn't have many uniforms, men usually just fought in what they brought with them Confederate Army was better trained Union had a bigger army Union had a more powerful Navy The Union had better access to railroads. African-Americans served in the in the Civil War on both the Union and Confederate side. In the Union army, over one hundred and seventy-nine thousand African American men served. This number comprised of both northern free African Americans and runaway slaves from the South who enlisted to fight. In the Confederacy, African-Americans were still slaves and they served mostly in labor positions. By 1865, the South allowed slaves to enlist but very few actually did.
