It was the Underground Railroad that caused so many slaves being able to get to safety. With a large number of slaves escaping using this method, slave owners convinced congress to pass the Fugitive Slave Act. Compromise of 1850, this was a series of legislation passed by Congress. This is the law that is known as the Fugitive Slave Law. The Compromise was comprised of several laws, and they stated that in District of Columbia slave trading was outlawed, but it was up to the state of Maryland to decide if there would be slavery, interstate slave trade could not be stopped by Congress, California became a free state under this law, voting would decide it slavery would be allowed in place like New Mexico and Utah, and it was illegal to aid or …show more content…

But the most famous African American unit was the one located in Massachusetts, they were the first enlist free blacks. The danger on the battlefield was faced by African American soldiers just as the white soldiers. The only difference is that the African American soldiers were more afraid of being captured and sent back to slavery more so than the combat itself. African Americans were considered as radical slaves by the Confederate, and if they were captured by them they would be executed. After losing a lot of men in the war by the Union, they decided to enlist slaves into the army. It was clear to the south that if they did not enlist the black slaves in the war, they would clearly lose to the north. Serving in the army African Americans made great sacrifices in the Civil War. Living in the South African Americans still encountered racism and prejudice, in spite of their accomplishments and courage in the war. For years after the Civil War, the blacks were denied their right to vote, and were still being beaten, lynched, and segregated. Only years later, when the Civil Rights Act was passed into law that this type of behavior was done away with. It
