Thinking is a natural human function. That being said, much of our thinking is bias, distorted, uninformed and judgmental. The human mind was not designed for independent thinking (). In order to move toward quality thinking, our minds must be painstakingly trained to think rationally and independently. The cultivation of the human mind into independent thinkers is what will determine the quality of life one will lead. In addition, the knowledge one produces by becoming an independent thinker will not only benefit the individual but society as a whole. This all begins with the concept of critical thinking. Although critical thinking can expose fallacies or bad reasoning, critical thinking is mainly used in strengthening arguments, improving theories and acquiring knowledge (). This will enhance ones working knowledge and creativity skills. For example, critical thinking skills are used by triage nurses to decide which patients have priority in regards to their wounds. If you received a triage nurse that lacks decent critical thinking skills, someone could die of their wounds because another patient with a less serious injury was being treated. Another example is a logger or tree topper. They are responsible for making sure, when hired, that the tree you desire to have removed does not damage or cause bodily harm to anyone while being removed. It allows for new ideas to be built upon old ones and for connections to be drawn between ideas. For the advancement of science to continue scientists need to be able to evaluate data and arguments and form individual ideas in order to strengthen those arguments or find flaws in them. The idea is for the world of science to be able to collaborate their problem-solving skills for the advancement of science and life.
