Our values, beliefs and attitudes about death and dying, grief, and loss are dictated within societies. Differences in death rituals help us better understand the definitions of what we view as normal in relation to death, dying, grief, and loss. Religion also plays a major role in how death is viewed. Exploring religious beliefs in group may help to give death a special meaning and purpose. It may provide the possibility of immortality, which could help reduce the impact that death has on adolescents.
A grieving person may need reassurance that what they are feeling is normal. One of the advantages of being in this type of group is realizing that you are not alone. Don’t pressure the grieving adolescent to talk if they do not want to talk. Group members can show support with their silence and being present, offer your support, ask how he or she is feeling, acknowledge the situation. Adolescents who may feel isolated or think that other people in their life don’t understand will benefit from being in a support group. Youth will give support to each other and share resources and information.
Empowerment will be effective in influencing the outcomes of group members. Group members will develop personal skill that will help with confidence. Empowerment in this group will help adolescents develop trust and acceptance between members. Empowerment and confidence will help youth to initiate communication, try new activities, and organize group events. Emotional maturity and common sense will aid members in demonstrating tolerance for other members in the group.
