A recent debate on whether the legalization and decriminalization of drugs will decrease the amount of killing in urban neighborhoods. Law enforcement believes that drugs must be eliminated from our society because of the drug- related violence. Other people believe that all the war on drugs has achieved is overcrowding jails with nonviolent offenders. The editor argues that our government needs to decriminalize drugs to make progress in the amount of killings in poverty stricken area or areas of low literacy. The article mentions that in urban black areas the homicide rate is above average because they live in a community where individuals are prepared to shoot at the sight of danger. This statement is true for the individuals living in that community and also police officers resulting in both parties feeling the need to retaliate. The distrust of the police by this community makes it harder for law enforcement to prosecute drug offenders because of most incidents that occur happens between strangers andt he recent incidents of police violence including police brutality, stop and frisking,

The money going towards this project went mostly towards treatment rather than law enforcement. Parent beginning to worry about the increased use of marijuana in teens and crack cocaine problem led to President Ronald Reagan declaring another war on drugs. President Reagan focused his efforts more on the law enforcement area and prison space rather than treatment. I agree with the editor that the War On Drugs noticeable positively impacted our society, it has just resulted in high homicide rates for adults living in urban neighborhoods, deaths of officers trying to prevent international trafficking, high incarceration rates for non-violent offenders,
