Many people, in many different states use drugs as an escape route from their problems, to mask their emotions, to make them feel good, or just for the fun of it. A drug can be defined as a substance or medicine that has an effect on a person psychologically when consumed into the body. Many of those people become addicted to the way a particular drugs makes them feel and later become addicted. Drugs are used for many different reasons and does not have a specific race or gender that choices to use it.
Within the millions of people that are addicted to drugs, many of them are females. If female was to become pregnant and simultaneously use drugs, it can have a negative effect on the child after birth. The consumption of any type of drug while pregnant effects the fetus negatively, resulting to problems and complications of the fetus upon birth (Zuckerman, 2013). I can slow or stop the development and result in a premature birth.

Whatever the mother is consuming or taking in, the fetus is receiving the same thing. The consumption of any type of drugs interferes with the way the fetus develops (Lee, 2016). Drug consumption has several different effects on a child in the infant stage of life. Consuming drugs while pregnant may result in defects in a child’s brain, kidney, heart, and/or bowel. Also, any child that has been in contact with any type of drug or substance is put at a higher risk for SIDS. SIDS stands for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, which is an unexplained death. This can happen to any child from age 0-12 months but the risks are even higher if the child has been in contact with a drug or substance during the time they were a fetus because their development was altered or not
