Some people say freedom must be fought for because it is not something easily received, but others say we have complete freedom naturally. With consideration to other countries, the United States of America has total freedom. However even Americans were once not entirely free, it was not until people gained the confidence to stand up for their individual rights that they achieved this way of life. It used to be the norm for African Americans to not even associate with white people, let alone have the same rights and equalities. Today it may not be African Americans dealing with the prejudices of the past, but women who are now dealing with similar situations worldwide. Women in countries other than the United States are not allowed to show who they really are or what they believe in. In America, one man’s voice led to a revolution of beliefs that everyone deserves the same personal liberties and freedom. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the leaders who fought for not only his equality, but also every other African American. In his “I Have a Dream” speech he emphasized the meaning behind the constitution’s intentions stating that, “The note was promised that all men, yes, black men as well as white me, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” (King 22-24) Through these words he is letting the world know that the founding fathers had the intentions of equality and not segregation. These words held true and sparked the change in everyday life that led to the desegregation of Americans in their communities.
