In Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech, the main idea is that all races should have equal rights, and African Americans should be fighting for their equality. One example from the speech is where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. says, “We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal.” In the Constitution, it says that all men are created equal, which means that everyone of any race, should have equal rights, and that is what African Americans should be fighting for. Another example of equality for all races is the Emancipation Proclamation. “Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation.” The Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech was about all races having equal rights, and the fight for their equality. “But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt.” This passage stood out to me because it shows how passionate he was about not giving up, fighting for their equality until they got it. Another passage that stood out to me was, “With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.” It talks about bringing the nation together, and for everyone to be able to be at peace with each other as equals. Finally, the last passage that stood out to me was, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by their color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” This was a very inspiring quote about equality, because it doesn’t talk about discrimination of color, but the character of others, and that that is what people should be judged for.
