George Washington is one of the most influential people in American History. Although not born American, he created the basis of America. George Washington sacrificed his life numerous times during the Revolutionary War in order to gain America its freedom, it deserved. He found along with all of his soldiers while Commander-in-Chief and risked everything to gain independence (Interexchanged.com). Even after the Revolutionary War and independence from Great Britain was gained, George Washington continued to give his life to his country and sat side by side with other founding fathers in order to create the US Constitution. He did this through the March on Washington, The Albany Movement, The Montgomery Bus Boycott, and many more. Martin Luther King Jr. did not only encourage peaceful protests but also helped pass the Civil Rights Act of 1965 and The Voting Rights Act of 1964. He did so through lectures, speeches, and writings listened to and read by Americans all over the country and the Federal Government (History.com). The Transcendentalism era was during the 1820s and 30s and was a philosophical movement (Britannica). Ralph Waldo Emerson believed in the new reforms that were developing including equality for everyone. He helped influence Americans in the emancipation of slaves during the Civil War. Emerson also believed that everyone had the right to be their own person and do what they believed is right inside of following what society believed is right. He showed this idea in his essay “Self Reliance” which allowed for Americans to understand the opportunities they had regarding their choices in politics and beliefs.
