Growing up Ignorant Getting a good education in Bridgeport is not an easy thing to do. From the very start, teachers have low expectations of us. They look at us like we’re slow and simple minded; they talk to us as if we can’t comprehend; they hover over us as if we need the extra attention. My question is why? Why are we treated as if we’re all dense before we even get to show our potential? Is it really that easy for people to determine the intelligence of a child based on where they grow up? Contrary to what I've just discussed, education is an important factor in my life. To me, it’s far more than just reading, writing, and arithmetic; it's the thing that equips students with all the knowledge they need to make their dreams become reality. Ever since I was a kid, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, but I changed my mind after telling my grade school teacher (or rather, teacher's assistant,) about my career goals. While having a discussion in class about what we wanted to do when we grew up, I told her I wanted to be a pediatrician.
