On January 12, 2010 a detrimental earthquake hit Haiti. The earthquake had a 7.0 magnitude (The Economist 30). This earthquake left thousands dead and wounded. The people who did survive had no shelter and were living with diseases that were spreading quickly . Before the earthquake Haiti was underdeveloped as a country (Historic World Events). According to Kutesa, the Haitian president at the time, “‘The magnitude of challenge facing the country is too big. With the level of poverty in the country, it provides it with no chance to cope up with the disaster’” (Xinhua News Agency 25). The poverty the country was facing caused problems for the survivors because it made necessary medical supplies harder to get. Canada sent humanitarian aid and, just like the U.N., paid Haitians to rebuild, plant and improve their conditions (Zoellick). Paying the Haitians for work that was already needed was very important because it allowed them to get their lives back to normal. Canada also took in refugees by changing immigration rules. Montreal, Canada let in an extra 3000 Haitian immigrants. Quebec, Canada allowed half-brothers and sisters, spouses and dependent children (Ingrid). These changes in immigration laws allowed refugees to improve their lives with better jobs. Uganda sent $100,000 to victims and pledged commitment to raise more funds for them (Xinhua News Agency 25). Israel has always been known for being “one of most nimble countries in disaster relief due to advanced medical technology” (Bronner). Israel sent over supplies and doctors to help with the disaster relief. These supplies were much needed because the doctors could not treat patients because they didn’t have the needed
