The United States has done many things in the past that everyone now wishes they could take back in a blink of an eye. In the articles “Images of hate: Nazi and Confederate flags in defeat faced different fate” (by Matthew Schofield) and “PRO/CON: should cities remove Confederate monuments?” (by Mitch Landrieu) they describe why hate symbols are truly terrible to see especially if a person went through a time with a certain hate symbol. The articles go more in-depth with why some people want to erase the past by removing and renaming certain buildings and statues that teach us about slavery and the civil war or some other historic event that happened. In “Images of hate: Nazi and Confederate flags in defeat faced different fate” it states “ All students must visit at least one former concentration camp to be reminded that the stories of the Holocaust were not only real but happened nearby.” (p.3) In Germany they make all students go to at least one camp to make sure a stunt like this never happens again in their country. Even though we don’t have anything that resembles a slave house or something like a terrible place to go and learn what we did; we have memorials to let us learn about the history in America. If students know that these things did happen it will have a better effect on our future. Another reason why we should not ban hate symbols is that it makes it easier to rewrite our history, saying this never happened and oh we never did that. In “PRO/CON: should cities remove Confederate monuments?” it states “History, unfortunately, has seen great nations become lost, isolated and ultimately extinct by refusing to confront the sins of the past and evolve to meet the demands of a changing world.” (p.2) In this quote, it is saying if we keep taking down memorials and parts of our history we will have nothing left except the thing you want us to remember.
