Heterosexism, the discrimination or prejudicial treatment against homosexuals, believing that heterosexuality is the normal sexual orientation. The LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transsexual) community has suffered from heterosexism for many decades. Many people who have a heterosexist mindset about the way others in society live life often do so for a few reasons. Justifiable or not, these reasons can be associated with religion, mainstream society, or possibly just a matter of upbringing. With this population growing and seeking more acceptance, discrimination is still a major issue for discussion. Homosexuals have been excluded from jobs, denied benefits, discriminated at schools, and ostracized within their respective religions. In addition, these individuals are also victims of discrimination on various scales that range from a national level all the way into their household structures. It can also be noted that the LGBT community suffers from many problems including decreased mental health, not limited to suicidal thoughts.
