Till date many law have been passed to control the alcohol consumption in South Australia. However majority of the laws have been focused on economic and business side of the issue, such as tax reform. Unfortunately this has not brought major difference as young people are still as addicted and attracted to alcohol as before. Therefore I strongly believe that another advocacy of increasing the initiation of drinking age to 21 should be joined in the existing laws. By raising the initial drinking age it would protect young adults from psychological and other health harm such as liver cancer and other damage caused by the inadequate consumption of alcohol.

Road accidents are a greater cause of death and injury in young adult’s life. The dangers related to the drink driving are very well known, as it is one of the leading causes of road accidents in Australia. According to the Transport Accident Commission “40 drivers and riders killed each year over the last five years with a Blood alcohol limit (BAC) greater than 0.05g/100ml, which 33% were between the ages of 17 to 24.” This suggests that the risk of young Australian adults being involved in an alcohol influenced driving and accidents is double to that of older individuals. From the statistics from the United States of America after raising the initial drinking age to 21, it was found that average number of young adults involved in the traffic crashes were reduced by 16%. Juxtaposed to that, from the evidence since the South Australia has deceased the minimum drinking age to 18, it is evident that average number of road crashes involving 17 to 20 years olds were increased by 10%. These two statistic evidently shows the strong correlation between the drinking age and road accidents.
