Lately, all I here about are kids and young adults getting in trouble because of underage drinking. Even people from my school are caught and facing the consequences. There has been a lot of debate over the years on whether the drinking age should be lowered, raised, or remain the same. It is my belief that the reason kids get themselves into trouble is because they are rebelling against the current drinking age. I feel that if the drinking age was eighteen and we were able to consume alcohol it wouldn’t be as appealing. The fact that we can’t drink makes us want it more. There was a short time in America between 1969-1976 where some states lowered the drinking age to eighteen. In 1984, congress passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act which required states to raise the age to twenty one or they would lose 10% of their federal highway funds. Studies showed that lowering the drinking age caused less binge drinking, however, traffic accidents were higher.
My stepdad is from England where the drinking age is eighteen. He has told me many stories of drinking with his parents at the age sixteen. He never had the desire to over drink or get carried away. He and his friends were always responsible about drinking. Having a couple drinks was no big deal because it was legal. There was never the need to rebel. Even my cousins which are related to my stepdad drink and they are my age. But they only have one or two beers. It has been said that lowering the drinking age would decrease the consumption of hard liquor. Alcohol is expensive, therefore, people would be more likely to have a beer or other drinks with less alcohol content since it is more affordable. That could also lead to fewer college deaths.
