Deviance in the Military Deviance is a part of every cultural group in society, even in the cultural group that demands for its members to conform to its rules. The United States military is known for its demand for discipline, honor, responsibility, and camaraderie. These four principles are considered norms in all branches of service. However, each branch of service has its own mission making each branch slightly different than each other. Within each branch, there are multiple units and each unit has its own norms. For example, in the Air Force, the norms of a fighter squadron are a lot different than the norms of a ROTC detachment at Rutgers University. The values that the military has are universal but the informal discipline systems in place are different from branch to branch. Though the styles of informal discipline are different in every branch, they all rely on peer influence to solidify the norms and values of the military. The only problem with the system of discipline in the military is that it forces people to conform, and if they choose not to, they are removed from the group. On the surface, this is not a problem because groups would not want outsiders. However, the demand of these norms and values are high, and only so many people are willing and able to conform to them. Because of this, the size of the group is limited. With an organization as active as the military, there is a high demand for personnel. Sometimes these ways of informal discipline, such at PT giving physical discomfort, forcing people to conform or to leave can hurt the military in the long run because of the lack of manpower. Over the coming years, the policies on military discipline would be interesting to follow considering the plans for an increase in military
