Ethics and integrity are essential components of character for any positive, influential leader.. Both ethics and integrity are skill sets that can be honed over time; however, it is in best practice to have them aligned with personal values which tend to be invariant. Remember the Titans, demonstrates how values can evolve. The Titans bring together a hostile torn community during the mandatory integration processes in Virginia through leaders maintaining their ethics. Not only does the movie depict values along with ethics and integrity, but it also illustrates the core competencies of this pillar. Coach Boone’s method of leadership although on surface level appeared harsh, was a contributing factor to the overall success of the football team. Nevertheless, his efforts extended into the community partially eliminating the race tension. Coach Boone’s military style approach to leadership is grounded in the competency of promoting a congruent behavior. A fundamental component of military leaders is the leader character, “moral and ethical qualities that help one determine what is right and to do what is appropriate” (Shriberg, 2011, p. 228). There are seven principles that guide the military and Boone which helps him reach his ultimate goal of inclusion, not just winning football games. The principles are: honor, integrity, courage, loyalty, respect, selfless-service, and duty (Shriberg, 2011, p. 228). These guidelines help Boone to create team. There are numerous examples throughout the film where Boone is a visionary beyond the color of skin tone. One of this top priorities is to ensure fairness in a general style. This is evident right away in the movie where he announces the laws. For example, whenever and by whoever the football is fumbled, that individual must pick up the football and run a mile. Coach Yoast was demoted by the school board when T.C. Williams was inaugurated. As a result, the Hall of Fame coach started looking at other opportunities. However, his values kept him at T.C. Williams. Yoast shows compassion and loyalty as his key values and is driven by doing the right thing. This is a key difference between a leader and a manager or coach, synthesizes down to management being concerned about efficiency and effectiveness; on the other hand, leadership establishes and motivates people to act (Ashby,2016). The true extent to Yoast’s undeniable leadership rooted in values is when he intentionally loses the Hall of Fame. Coach Yoast is presented with an ultimatum by the voting committee of the Hall of Fame, the white organization wants the Titans to lose the football game and warn Yoast about the events that are about to unfurl. In the Northern Virginia Regional Championship Game, Yoast takes a stronghold against the injustice by confronting the referee and states that he doesn’t care if he also gets dragged through the mud because his values and integrity are greater than his desire for recognition.
