Writing is very complex and can be hard for some people. I know that it is very important to be original in your papers. Whether it is in your writing voice or in your literacy. Even though I have yet to fully grasp my writing voice. I have noticed it comes mainly from past experiences. While my voice is a big part of my writing, literacy is just as important. I have come a long way in my literacy and still have so much more to work on, especially my vocabulary. Writing is also about research and providing evidence to validate your claim. My voice comes from my past experiences, whether it’s within sports, social situations, or school. When I am writing a paper that I can relate to personal situations I thrive. I flourish because I am able to go into great detail writing about my past experiences. This is really when I notice my voice come out. I tend to hear it more when I am providing evidence for claims I have made. If I was writing about how everyone should do something active every day and get outside. I would relate it to my athletic career and how it has benefited me. However, I feel like I truly have not found my writing voice yet. During Highschool it was always the same writing rubric which was five paragraphs, and we were told not to include ourselves in any way. We were instructed to never use the word “I” which I completely disagree with. This doesn't make sense to me because I think writing is better when the readers can relate to you and understand what the author thinks. I would always just write almost aimlessly because I only cared about the grade. As long as you completed the paper and met the standard you would get an A. Ranging from psychology to history and even math. My confidence in writing literacy is definitely not too high. Nevertheless, I do not struggle with it but I am not the best at it. I believe that this class will help me grow because even within this paper I am trying my best to find synonyms and improve my paper in any way. My growth mindset has definitely been helpful throughout my first year at Point Loma. It has been a tool during my first semester because I have learned to grow not only in class but in my faith. In class, I have grown by actually taking the time to read the material and understand what I am being taught. I have grown in my faith by being more connected to God and fully allowing him to enter my life. My smart goal for writing that is measurable is adding more words to my vocabulary. Right now I think that my vocabulary is pretty basic and could definitely be improved by adding more unique words to my writing.
