Nursing Philosophy
Nursing is one of the most highly respected and trusted careers in the world, so it is no surprise that over the years various nurses have perfected their beliefs on how to carry out their duties. Nursing philosophies describe the ethics and values that nurses establish in their everyday care. This paper will examine my own nursing philosophy using the nursing metaparadigm, and explain what nursing theory I feel closely relates to my own.

Patients are now spending less time in hospitals and are being sent on their way even if they are not as healthy as they were when they came in. Health is on a continuum, and the definition of a healthy person changes per individual. A patient’s definition of healthy may change from before their hospital stay after they leave. I believe that it is the nurse’s responsibility to ensure that the patient is physically and mentally competent to carry out the duties needed for their lives after their hospital stay. Additionally, making sure their patient is being discharged to the right kind of home, whether that be a patient’s own home or a long-term care facility. Health is about healing, but also preparation for when you can no longer care for your patient and they are on their …show more content…

This could be at the hospital, in the grocery store, or even in their own home. Nurses have an image to uphold, and continuing to be caring in any environment can improve society’s overall health. I believe that nurses are always nurses no matter where they are. You simply cannot “turn off” your nursing instincts and abilities, and nurses remain nurses no matter where they are. This also affects health because a persons health may change depending on the environment they are in, and a nurse must adapt to that. When someone is choking in a restaurant, a nurse being present can make a huge difference in if a person survives or not. Person is also affected by environment because the environment can improve getting care or making it worse. Doing little things while nursing like turning up the heat or turning the lights down in a patient’s room can make a huge difference in their overall
