Pennsylvania Roadside Waste Disposal Management Solutions to Protect Waterways, Human Health and Environment

Living in a developed or developing country tends to make people unaware of all the waste that is created in that country. As many states may have this problem, Pennsylvania has been having the issue of waste being dumped on roadsides and near waterways for years. The waste that accumulates is harmful not only to the land, but also the rivers, streams, and lakes. This policy brief describes how the Pennsylvania State government can take action and lessen the effects of waste disposal. Providing a designated area(s) for waste disposal, encouraging recycling, and providing public awareness will have an impact on land and water pollution in the state. Eating a fast food meal while driving down the road? Where do you put your trash? The easiest thing would be to throw it out your window, which is a problem in Pennsylvania. Tires are very commonly seen on the side of the road and water collects on the inside of the tires. The stagnant water and litter sites are a perfect environment for the breeding of insects, such as mosquitoes, bacteria, and rodents which can carry and transmit diseases. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, just a few of the many diseases carried by rodents include Leptospirosis, Salmonella, and the Plague.
