Why I intervened as I did
There were numerous reasons why I designed an intervention to tackle Kyle’s lack of personal hygiene and personal care. This intervention was sparked by numerous comments other people said in relation to Kyle’s lack of hygiene and this provided me with the idea of facilitating a one-to-one programme with Kyle.
The thought of having to draw up a one to one programme around a sensitive issue such as hygiene frightened me initially but it was necessary for me to help Kyle with his lack of personal care skills. My intervention role meant helping Kyle with his personal hygiene issues and making sure he understood the concept of good hygiene, which is essential to one’s self esteem and well-being. I attempted to teach Kyle to apply the hygiene methods I researched and not to set such a high standard objective for Kyle to meet in this one to one personal care programme.

It finished just how it should have when dealing with someone with poor hygiene and trying to get him to implement in a practical situation e.g. like the idea of getting him to use the shower facility in the resource centre and showering in gym down in the south campus of the college. Kyle accepted my approach well with an understanding of the topic discussed, without getting offended or defensive over telling him about his poor hygiene. He demonstrated consideration of how the personal care programme would be beneficial towards his mental health and wellbeing. Personal hygiene revolves around daily actions that help keep one’s body clean such as washing his hands, brushing his teeth, wearing deodorant and scrubbing his body with water and
