Many people consider themselves germaphobes to some degree, but obsessively washing your hands over and over again. Not wanting to put your hands on anything, due to not knowing where other people’s hands have been, and when the last time everything was washed. (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Having a specific phobia of germs can affect a person and their everyday life. Imagine a life of only trying to be clean all the time, we could end up always thinking about germs and not being able to live a normal life. Within this paper we will focus on the prevention’s and treatments for this disorder as well as the documentation of the many behaviours of Julie Flynn, and the reasons as to why I believe she could possibly be diagnosed with this specific phobia. Yet people without this phobia may not see the reason as to why cleaning everything everyday is such a big thing. (St. Joseph Hospital, 2018). A person without a phobia of germs get more alert when they go into a hospital full of germs, now think of having that feeling all the time because that is exactly what people with a phobia of germs feel and think of daily. Living with this illness just means there are carrying a burden with them. People can not just stop cleaning themselves or thinking of ways they will end of getting germs on them. All in all, it is an illness that is not very dangerous, it can get serious if not taken care of when it first comes about in an individual’s life, it can lead to other illnesses, or suicidal thoughts if it does get too far.
