It goes without saying that in the modern day, police is a hot-button topic. It is nearly impossible to find an article discussing the current state of policing without a strong bias. As is all too often the case with any topic the discussion of police has become heavily politicized. When something becomes politicized one side will not hear the other. While it is true that systemic racism, police brutality, and accountability are major issues that face many police departments it is also true that it has improved in the past few years. It is also important to say that there is a general tension and at times hostility directed towards the police as a whole. It is impossible to know if you have what it takes until you are in that driveway on a domestic abuse call. But above all, one must have the proper mindset and reason to join. It is the inner reason that drives our actions more times than not, especially in situations where higher levels of thinking are imparted by adrenaline. Unfortunately, if someone is subconsciously or even consciously racially motivated it is near impossible to train that out of them. And oftentimes this comes up in highly stressful situations like on call. The hurdle of this issue is how easy it is to hide, at times the person isn't even aware of it. For the next 12 or so weeks the recruit is trained in laws, gun use, officer safety, defensive driving, and other key aspects of policing. Every officer, especially if they are field officers, should receive extensive training in psychology and criminal psychology. At one point or another, they will be called into a crime in process or right after. The people at the scene are likely not in the best state of mind; they are stressed, scared, and at times unstable. Officers should be adequately equipped to deal with these situations. Disaster can easily and quickly strike. officers should not only understand what these people are going through but also how to handle it in a manner that keeps everyone safest. I am sure that officers get a certain level of training in this it is an unfortunate truth that many still go in with the mindset of getting the thugs off the streets. This can lead to officers mishandling situations and escalating them instead of de-escalating which can have devastating
