Reading speeches vs hearing speeches When listening to a speech, one may wonder if they would get the same information from reading it instead. When reading a speech, one cannot hear the voice of the speaker or how the audience reacts but when listening or watching, one can clearly see and hear the speaker and the audience when watching. When John F Kennedy gave his inaugural address, one could see the audience and hear the emotion in his voice but if one was to read it, he would not be able to hear this. His speech is a great example to see how reading a speech and listening to a speech are different and give different amounts of information. Reading a speech is different than listening to the speaker orate the speech because of the different pace, emotion, and repetition that one can observe in the speaker’s voice. Reading a speech does not allow the reader to hear the pace of the speaker whereas listening to a speech would allow one to hear which words are important and hear the pace of the speech. When listening to a speech, one might understand the orator’s emotion about the topic that he or she is speaking of by listening to the pitch and tone of the voice but when reading, this cannot be done. When reading a speech, one will not be able to get the audience’s reaction due to the fact that there is no audience to see, but when watching or listening, one can listen for clapping and cheering to show that the crowd agrees.
