Most people probably think that simply shaking the other team’s hands at the end of the game is sportsmanship, but that is not how people should view it. Webster’s Online Dictionary defines sportsmanship as, “conduct (such as fairness, respect for one's opponent, and graciousness in winning or losing) becoming to one participating in a sport,” (“Sportsmanship”). I loved playing sports and I loved watching sports when I was growing up and because of that I was able to see many great and many bad examples of sportsmanship. As a kid I always woke up and turned on the TV to watch Sportscenter on ESPN, and there is on specific instance that totally changed my perception on sportsmanship forever. Jeter’s last game at Yankee stadium ended in magical fashion. He hit a walk off single in the last home game of his career. Jeter could have just ended his career then, however the Yankees still had a three-game series left against the Boston Red Sox in Boston. Most people know that the Yankees and Red Sox rivalry is one of the best in sports, and most people would think that a player who ended their career in a way that Jeter did would not have played against the Red Sox. However, Jeter said that he felt he owed it to the fans of Boston to play his final game there. Red Sox fans hate the Yankees and the fact that Jeter felt he owed it to the fans of Boston is just mesmerizing, and the way the Red Sox fans greeted him is even more amazing. Jeter got one of the best standing ovations in sports history, and it was in front of probably the teams fan base who probably disliked him the most. This is a prime example of sportsmanship because it goes two ways. Jeter did not have to play in those games, and the Red Sox fans did not have to recognize the way they
