The Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) is the world’s largest carnivorous marsupial. They can reach 20 to 30 inches in length and weigh anywhere from 9 to 26 pounds. Their size varies according to range and food availability. It has a large head and very sharp, strong teeth, delivering a nasty bite, one of the most powerful mammal bites pound for pound. Their fur is course and dark brown or black. Some have white stripes and/or light spots on their fur. They are nocturnal and solitary and usually make their homes in hollowed out logs, caves, under rocks or in burrows. They often eat dead carcasses, insects, birds, fish and snakes. They eat the entire animal, all parts including hair and bones. They are native to Tasmania, Australia. Once found on the mainland as well, it is thought that they are no longer there because of the introduction of dingoes.
