The 13th Amendment: The Criminalization Of African Americans While being in the United States all my life, my family came across various situations having to do with the oppression of African Americans. Some people in my family have dealt with unjust laws first hand. For example, my grandma who was imprisoned for fighting for her civil rights and my godfather who was jailed for being caught driving with one of his friends who sold drugs. My family was treated very unfairly, so I made it my mission for over almost 9 years of learning history; to understand each and every law in the constitution so that one day my family will have justice. 1 out 4 human beings in the world are in prison in the U.S. We have a higher rate of prisoners than any other country. These things do not just happen, history is not something you choose, it is put in place for you. Many people do not understand why so many African Americans are in prison and the communities are so bad. The government with the help of the president and congress have had strategic plans to criminalize and enslave African Americans for profit since way before time did exist. For example, “Birth of A Nation” confirmed the story that many whites wanted to tell about the civil war and its aftermath. In every image or video shown the black person was always depicted as evil and animalistic. “Birth of a Nation”, also predicted how america would operate inside the courts for African Americans by going to trial then automatically being considered guilty. Not saying that every black person is innocent, because some actually live the stereotypes whites give us. This could also be the purpose of the rebuild of
