The civil war had many contributing factors. The political and social unrest had been underlying and brewing ever since the start of the country. The fact that slavery was such a controversial topic also was a deciding factor. Abraham Lincoln once said “Slaves will never be free unless there is a war”. Although all of these factors were contributing to the start of this war within the United States the epicenter of a problem was within the political issues. In pre-Civil War era, there were already a divide between the north and the south, this had a great deal to do with the federal government trying to regulate or even abolish slavery. During this meeting the two most prominent states’ rights activists, Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry both were not present at this meeting. The states lost the right whether or not they could follow federal laws, also known as nullification and because of this many saw the Constitution as ignoring the rights of states. When the southern states realized that the process of nullification wouldn’t work the southern states moved more toward succeeding because of the fact that they didn’t feel respected. Slavery was a very important issue when it comes to the start of the Civil War. The controversy on if slavery is morally wrong of not came up a lot between northern and southern states.
