Even through the novel and the 1932 film reflect the different periods in which they were produced, they both reflect the issues of Victorian Era. As we all know, Victorian Era was a time of big changes. Britain gained a lot of opportunities to develop their own political life. In addition, those discoveries that were made in Britain at that time were important not only for the country but also to humanity as a whole. A lot of scientific discoveries were made during Victorian Era. Basis of morality during Victorian Era can be described as a set of values, based on a strict code of conduct (which actually lead to a lot of violations and crimes), sexual restrictions and strong ethics. At the same time British people began to appreciate industriousness, punctuality, modesty and thrift. People were used to live in cruel world, and then – boom – big changes were made by Victoria. No one expected that, people were forced to accept new rules, which lead people to be anxieties and fears. They had to pretend to be someone else, and this is where the split of personalities came. From the obvious point of view, the misfortune that happened to Nick is not an accident. While watching that scene you feel that they failed. The constant presence of strangers, who tend to sniff out everything, and go around the bush, makes the atmosphere tense. While watching that scene I felt so scared, however book hasn’t have me that feeling at all, I felt worried that they’re in the there, but I still thought that they would be able to make other believe in the accident. These two – Frank and Cora – are far from being able to simply live as they would like to. This shows us that no matter what you do, the karma will always hit you
