The history of agriculture is much more complicated than one may imagine. Here’s why. Agriculture is the practice of growing, cultivating, and consuming plants and animals. Why is agriculture so important? Well, agriculture is the root of everything. From the steak on your dinner table, to the drywall in your house, and even the spark plug in your car! Yes, agriculture really is “The Seed That Grew America”. Here’s how farming got to be what we know it as today.

The Prehistoric Farm Age

Literally. Around the same time every year in Mesopotamia the Nile River floods into parts of Mesopotamia. The farmers began to dig trenches to allow water to drain from their fields. This, they noticed, helped them to irrigate the crops and it also gave them easy access to water when needed. This then led to the popularity of permanent settlements throughout Southeastern Europe and North Eastern Africa.

Eastern European Farming As the popularity of permanent settlements reached Europe around 3500 BC it spread two directions. North and West. The popularity of farming began to grow. This ultimately led to newer and more modernized techniques beginning to evolve from this leading to the Neolithic Revolution.

Neolithic Revolution Age The Neolithic Revolution age was the gradual exposure to modern agriculture to the rest of the known world. This is also when humans started to domesticate animals such as the goat, donkey, pig, cow, and dog. Humans then found out that they could eat these animals rather than chase after and hunt their prey. This is where most documented agriculture comes from.
