Over 5,000 people died of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793. In the book Fever 1973 by Laurie Halse Anderson, Mattie’s family suffered from the Yellow Fever Epidemic. Many people died because of it but unfortunately some still didn’t believe that it was the Fever. Some even had the symptoms but blew it off saying they were just tired. Some blamed it on the heat, others on the Domingan Refugees. No matter what they blamed it on it didn’t get better for quite a while. Mattie’s family got through the Yellow Fever Epidemic though because they had perseverance. Even though many bad things happened they pushed through and it eventually got better.

Both Mother and Mattie were very sick but they had perseverance and pushed through. First, Mother got very sick. Mother vomited blood and was violently ill. She almost didn’t make it. Even though Mother wanted Mattie to leave, Mattie stayed to take care of her. After the doctor comes Mattie and Grandfather finally decided to leave so that Mattie wouldn’t catch the fever. They were kicked off the carriage once the driver realized Grandfather was sick. Mattie took care of Grandfather and kept trying to catch fish and berries. Then, Mattie had to start a fire and she had to keep getting water. But when she went to try to get more things she got the fever and passed out. Grandfather was still sick also but he went to go look for Mattie and took her to the doctor even though she was unconscious. Mattie fought through her sickness and so did Grandfather. They got home and then somebody tried to break in and unfortunately Grandfather died but even in his last moments he fought and had perseverance.
