The Symbolic Transformation of Women in Society

Throughout the short stories I have been reading recently, women have experienced hardships and diversities that seem somewhat unconquerable. Society has placed women throughout these stories into situations that cause mental issues such as depression and anxiety. Women in a traditionalistic society were forced to think inside the box, wear uncomfortable clothing, and listen to a man regardless of what she thought. This goes against what women stand up for today; and is shocking to discover that these traditions were thought of as normal. When we think of a woman in today’s society, we don’t necessarily think of them as less than men. The traditionalistic view of women in society has changed over time from the house woman who was once thought of as a man’s possession; to the independant and strong individuals we clearly view them as today. …show more content…

The woman suffers from depression as the man in her relationship is following society’s standards at the time. Many women in similar situations to this story have gone through the same societal dilemma. A woman like the one in The Yellow Wallpaper helped shape the way women are viewed as and treated today. The vision of a woman has changed over time as people have fought for equality amongst the sexes. From a woman’s right to vote, to the right to drive a vehicle; women from all cultures and races have fought for equality. The woman in The Yellow Wallpaper has emotional problems because society had told women to be quiet in such an abusive relationship. When the woman looked at the wallpaper, she started to see things that weren’t real. Most women in today’s society do not have to go through such hardships like being a man's property, or being forced to stay inside a confined
