After engaging with the readings and videos about transgenerational family therapy, I learned of the benefits of using techniques such as process questioning and genograms during counseling sessions. Although I have created a genogram in some of my other courses throughout my academic career, I have never practiced explaining the purpose of a genogram to a client family. During the planning phase of completing my genogram role-play script, one challenge I encountered was determining how in-depth my approach to explaining the purpose of a genogram would be due to the word count limit. After taking on a client’s perspective and reviewing the assigned materials, I was better prepared to create my genogram role-play script. In particular, reading the case study in the Ballard et al. (2016) article helped me understand the benefits of using genograms in couple and family counseling and how to approach the topic of a genogram in the counseling session. …show more content…
The co-counselors adapting to Charles’ absence during Family #3’s FCR session by explaining the importance of having each family member present to contribute to the group goals showed me that there will be factors that are out of my control that I must adapt to. I also learned how to provide families with tools to resolve conflict by watching the co-counselors providing a rules for fair fighting sheet for the family to review. Since Charles has played a significant role in initiating conflict, I think it is important to briefly review the rules for fair fighting sheet during the beginning of my next co-counseling session. Reviewing the tool will help ensure that everyone has a similar understanding of the importance of following the rules during and out of
