Today I will be doing my Phase 3 Individual Project I will fully be addressing a case totally based on the Estelle V. Gamble prison case. The Estelle V. Gamble case brings about a lot of controversial comments and thought by the American citizens living in the United States because it definitely shows you a big problem in our correctional facilities in the United States. This case made it more then obvious that our correctional facilities needed some work to be done to in the way they responded to inmate medical needs. Gamble case all began because an inmate brought a claim to the Supreme Court that stated that inmate was subject to cruel and unusual punishment. It was stated in the claim that state correctional department and two correctional officers where the inmate was held at failed to give him proper health care. The story behind this case began at the Texas Department of Corrections. Texas Department of Corrections gave an inmate the regular task that included unloading cotton bales from a truck as well as loading the truck back up. On one of the days that he was working on November 9th of 1973 to be specific he happened to get hurt by a cotton bale that fell directly on his back causing injuries on his back. This man after this injury constantly complained for over three months about his back pain and how he was uncomfortable which also caused chest pains. All the chest pain and back pain caused him to refuse to work and later on was treated for irregular heartbeats. Gamble was brought to the prison disciplinary committee on January 31st because of his failure to proceed working caused by the bale of cotton that fell on his back. The Estelle V. Gamble lawsuit initially began on February 11th of the year 1974 when Gamble turned in a document that was handwritten. The Supreme Court did indeed find that the case was solid and it was obvious the inmate was definitely subject to cruel and unusual punishment. The eight amendment was found to be violated by the Texas Department of Corrections. The Supreme Court came to a decision which was in favor of the defendant because after the Supreme Court had reviewed the case there was definitely a failure by the Texas Department of Corrections to provide the inmate with the proper medical care that he indeed needed bad and did not receive. The Estelle V. Gamble nevertheless did developed valid points and did have real evidence of his mistreatment. The Estelle V. Gamble case did establish the principle that the
