Nurses provide a vital role in the health care system. Sure, we may not be able to diagnose or write prescriptions. However, we are the main advocates for the patients. We also stand by the side of our patients through their entire hospital stay. It is the nurse who notices the smallest changes in their patients.
Ethics is very important in nursing practice and involves respect and advocacy for the needs of the patient. Both, ethics and honesty have major impact on patient safety. Another core value is autonomy. Autonomy is demonstrated when the nurse supports independent decision making and respects the patient`s right to self-determine the course of action. Human dignity is another core value in nursing practice.
Nursing is an age old profession of compassion, encouragement, and support to the injured. With the development of learned abilities nurses are able to heal by easing suffering, treatment, and encouragement of the care of people, families, communities, and populations. Professional nursing roles entail practices based on evidence that are defensive, recuperative, and promotive when focusing on a holistic manner. Developing professional roles of nurses are highly recognized and nurtured. A nurse plays an essential role in the healthcare system.
Philosophy of Nursing In this paper I will discuss my philosophy of nursing and my definition of nursing. My definition of nursing is that nursing is an autonomous and caring profession. Nursing is an art and science that promotes health through patient-centered care.
The study of ethics, moral conduct and decision making regarding ethical issues in nursing is a vital component of nursing education. Nurses may be confronted almost on a daily basis with the need to make nursing decisions when there is no right or wrong answer. Nurses will at times feel caught in the middle (Pavlish et. al, 2011). This dilemma demonstrates how easily ones nursing practice can be significantly altered.
Every nursing, in order to consider the profession must have an understanding of at least three of the five professional values, in my opinion. These values consist of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice (Taylor 96). Beginning with the professional value of Altruism, the believe in or practice and self concern for the well-being of others (96). I believe that in order to be the best nurse you can be for your patients, you must understand the concept of altruism. As a nurse, your profession is to take care of people, if you do not know the professional value of altruism than you cannot possibly understand how important it is to care about the wellbeing of your patient.
Being a nurse is not always as easy and picture perfect as people paint it to be. A nurse is expected to act perfectly professional, even when tears, anger and all-around emotions are begging to come out. A nurse must always be the one that has their life together, especially when others do not. They are there to be the ones to hold and care for others in desperate times of need. Nurses are expected to be more than just a nurse, but rather an advocate, caregiver, support system and professional.
What does nursing mean to me? Nursing means helping people heal, meeting their needs while they are in your care, listening to concerns, protecting them from harm, and educating them how to care for themselves while treating them with dignity, compassion and respect. Nursing is giving of yourself to the care of people and community, while expecting nothing in return. It is having compassion for people and their health, being a humanitarian, and making sure patients receive the best care possible. Nurses must also deal with families of patients with gentleness and kindness, realizing they are going through a stressful situation also.
My Values and Beliefs of Nursing I believe that nursing is focused on the holistic care of individuals and their families in order to achieve and maintain an optimal level of health, a great quality of life, and comfort. This is done through promoting healthy living, providing a safe environment, preventing illness, and caring for the individual
Caring: Caring is one of the most important words used to describe a nurse. Larson (1984) defines caring as the core, essence and distinguishing attribute of nursing. I believe that I possess the strength to care for others and behave in a caring manner.
