Provision one, a provision in the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses, entails that nurses should pursue their nursing career with empathy and respect towards all patients. In other words, patients should be viewed as separate individuals with separate values and beliefs. Nurses and other healthcare professionals should respect their individual decisions, whether they agree with them or not. This code of ethics provision relates to the ethical dilemma of a patient refusing medical treatment. Although nurses are trained to do all that they are capable of doing to save patients’ lives, sometimes nurses reach a dilemma that puts a strain on their practice.
The case of Anna’s premature labour describes the difficult and ethically – challenging situations that are present in health care settings. The scenario outlines the moral values and principles that are in question, such as the patient’s autonomy, beneficence and the sanctity/ quality of life. Autonomy, is the ability for the patient to exercise her choice, beneficence is the act of benefiting others. The sanctity and quality of life which reflect the value of life, and the values of choice and self-determination (Collier & Haliburton, 2015 p. 440). The decisions that could be taken in this case involve, Anna agreeing with Dr. Brown and not to have any treatment to her baby, thus allowing the child to die, or disagreeing with Dr. Brown and
Abortions are one of the most important decisions that a woman can make about her own body. Her choice to keep or not keep the fetus is morally permissible and should be protected. Ethical dilemmas, also known as a moral dilemma, is a situation in which there is a choice between two options, neither of which resolves the situation completely. In other words, both options will result in negative results based on society and/or personal guidelines. Labor and delivery nurses are often confronted with ethical dilemmas in practice. To help student nurses prepare for this eventuality, nursing programs do their best to incorporate education about ethics and professionalism into courses. This introduction to ethics in nursing school also assists future nurses to begin recognizing and managing their own personal values in a way that can help guide them in resolving ethical conflicts they will encounter throughout their professional careers.
“Ethical knowing also involves clarifying conflicting values and exploring alternative interests, principles, and actions” (Chann and Kramer, p. 7). Although every individual has their own moral compass and beliefs as to what is more important for the patient, it is through experience and through principles of nursing that even if there is not a satisfactory result from an ethical dilemma, one result will be more satisfactory than the other option. It is up to the nurse to discern which option will benefit the patient more and advocate for the patient. As well, not every situation will you agree with the patient and have to advocate for the patients best wishes even if it’s against your personal beliefs.

Abortion is not only a fluctuating concept in our society, but an ethical and emotional debate, as well. The image I have chosen presents concepts from a cultural and historical background, as well as presents an ethical, emotional, and logical appeal to the audience. The debate about abortion has simply been overblown and exhausted. The truth of the matter is, abortion is murder. Ending a life, whether innocent or guilty, is murder.
Thesis Statement: Abortion has been a major topic throughout the years, there has been much debate between pro-choice and pro-life but if people can come together to reach comprises it could help society make positive progress. There are many different views and opinions on abortion in today’s world. Some would say that abortion is wrong and others would say it is right; and some would say it is wrong or right depending on the circumstances. This is when complications surface and people began to look at all aspects of the situation. Abortion has always been a controversial social issue but not as potent as the year 2016 and 2017.
Pregnancy, giving birth, and abortion are three interrelated topics. They offer moral dilemmas that aren’t easily solved or tackled. In this paper, I will discuss abortion and I will approach it from the point of view of a consequentialist, a deontological ethicist, and a virtue ethicist. I will start by defining abortion, provide some information about the reasons why women opt to abort a fetus, then give a specific example of a moral dilemma that a woman is facing, and explore the dilemma from the different points of view.
In most cases, when the life of the mother is under threat, doctors advice for an abortion to avoid death. This is a decision that can be supported by the utilitarian moral theory that holds that if an act has more benefits than shortcomings, then it is morally right. However, under the deontological theory that focus on rights and duties of an individual abortion based on this case may not support the moral status of the fetus because the fetus is denied the right to live. In addition, as long as the doctor plays his duty to advice on what is good for the mother and the fetus, he fails to protect the fetus by allowing abortion as a way of saving the mother’s life (Dale, 18 March
For example, finds out whether continuing or terminating a pregnancy cause greater physical or psychological harms and risks to the mother. On the other hand, Bonevski & Adams (2001) further added that abortion may expose the mother to grief and regret. As such, it is important to gain mother’s consent before making the decision. Apart from that, in resolving slightly similar case study of 18 years old student was referred in view of her request for termination of pregnancy. She was gang-raped and found out she is pregnant.
“In the year 2004, there were approximately 1.37 million abortions performed in the United States” (Chew 143). Since 1973 and even before, abortion has raged into a hot-topic issue among the press, politicians, and even doctors; among many other people. This topic has been disputed since even before the late Nineteenth Century. During the 1940s, it even became a social norm to raid the abortionists’ offices. From that time on, the abortion debate has been brought into light many times.
With advancement in the field of medicine, contemporary methods are now used and involve the use of medication and surgical procedures (Nada 1998 page 61). Each country in the world has different legality, cultural and religious statuses and prevalence of abortion. The ethical principles towards abortion and removal of pregnancies also vary. The United States of America have heated politics surrounding the issue of abortion in pro-life and pro-choice campaigns (Ted 1995 page 66). These are based on the argument that for one group, it should be legalized and for the other, abortion should not.
Abortion has been a controversial issue in our society. The options are which path to take in life. The two paths we have to take or to choose from are give the child a chance to live or to be a teenage parent or having an abortion. In the young age of a pregnant women will be the hardest part of her life and when she doesn’t think that she can deal with the fact that she will having a child in young age the only way that she will take would be to get an abortion. The fetus will be decide to abort by their mother resulting in or caused by its death.
